Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa

Macdonald Manchester is a large luxury four-star hotel in Manchester city centre with 338 rooms. The Macdonald chain is big on environmentalism, operating “sustainable purchasing arrangements with the suppliers of our food, consumables, equipment, energy and chemicals” and taking measures to reduce waste, energy usage and pollution.

Location

The hotel is 200 metres from Manchester Piccadilly train station, and a three-minute walk from Manchester Oxford Road. Manchester Victoria is connected by the tram network. Old Trafford, about 10 minutes away, is best travelled to by train or metrolink, to Manchester United station or Pomona respectively. Alternatively, you can take one of the many buses. If you are travelling to Manchester from the airport, there is a 15-minute rail shuttle to Piccadilly station.

Rooms

There are four main types of room at the hotel: classic rooms, family rooms, city view rooms (on the highest floors), executive rooms (with a large desk for business travellers) and panoramic rooms (with 30 square metres of space).

All are en-suite and come with free (wired) broadband, air conditioning, a flat screen TV, a hairdryer and GHD straighteners. There are a few classy additional touches, such as triple glazed windows and Bose iPod docks. If you would like more of your own space, there are some luxury suites which are essentially apartments, with a separate lounge, a dining table and a guest bathroom. For ultimate pampering, try one of the 18 dedicated ‘spa bedrooms’, contained on a secure floor.

Facilities

There is a top notch gym (or “technogym”)  and a spa with saunas, steam rooms and all kinds of showers. The restaurant, Signatures, specialises in season British food made from local, organic ingredients, which has earned it an impressive two AA rosettes. Less indulgent but more important for many hotel bookers is the provision of 13 meeting rooms, including a function room with 300 capacity.

Guest review

Most guests loved the excellent location, and the high standards of the rooms. Some complained that the food was overpriced and lacking in variety and that the lifts were unreliable and often out of order. Overall, the hotel averages a score of 8.7/10 based on cleanliness, comfort, location, services, staff and value for money.
