Hilton Chambers

The only thing ‘Hilton’ about the Hilton Chambers is the name, but this city centre hostel has everything the budget traveller could need, with rates starting from £15 a night. Its parent company, Hatters Group (which also owns another Manchester hostel, Hatters Hostel) was awarded Second Best Hostel Chain Worldwide by hostelworld.com in 2008.

Location

The Hilton Chambers is right in the heart of Manchester city centre. Shudehill, Market Gardens and Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stations are about three minutes’ walk away. From any of these stops you can take the Eccles line to Pomona, which is five minutes from Old Trafford. If you are arriving from the airport, Manchester Piccadilly train station, from where the rail shuttle operates, is only five minutes on foot.

Rooms

There is quite a wide range of rooms available at the Hilton Chambers, from an eight-bed dormitory to an en-suite triple to an en-suite single. Prices are between 20 and 25 per cent more expensive at the weekend.

Facilities

A light breakfast of tea, coffee, juice and toast is included in all rates, but there is a fully fitted self-catering kitchen if you fancy rustling up some dinner or something more substantial. There are a number of computers with internet access and there is also wifi, but both are charged. Importantly for a hostel, there is free luggage storage. There isn’t a great deal of facilities otherwise, but, if the weather is good during your stay, there might be a barbecue and some beers on the outside decking area. They also run a pub crawl around the local area.

Guest review

The general concensus seems to be that the Hilton Chambers is a decent, basic and good value hostel. If you are staying at the Hilton Chambers, stay in a dorm: the private rooms are priced similarly to a lot of B&Bs and hotels in the city, but the standard is not as high. Overall, the hotel averages a score of 7.6/10 based on cleanliness, comfort, location, services, staff and value for money.
